Notice the Journey

Trauma-Integrating Spiritual Direction Supervision, Education, & Apprenticeship

Welcome SDI Essence 2023 Participants!

Hello! I hope that you are safe and well.

I go by "Shannon Michael."

I'm a trauma-integrating somatic spiritual director. My scope of practice integrates traumatology (the study of trauma), Applied Polyvagal Theory, Applied Attachment Theory, and Internal Family Systems with the Wisdom Traditions.

I believe that spiritual direction is intended to help us establish (where absent), cultivate (where present), and restore (where damaged) the connections to our Inner Wisdom in the Somatic relationships with our Self, others, Spirit, and the planet. My trauma-integrating perspective holds safe, brave, and complex space to be with and work with the trauma ruptures and residues as you make that journey toward wholeness.

My website has links to my online learning platform, portions of my own writing, and numerous other resources. If I can support your journey, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Warmly,

Shannon Michael Pater

Conference Workshop: Neuro-Mysticism and Contemplation

Friday, May 5 • 2:30pm to 4:00pm

Neuro-Mysticism and Contemplation:

The Essence of Trauma-Informed Spiritual Direction

Spirituality is the felt sense of safe and nurturing connections within and among the Somas of one’s Self, others, Spirit, and the Earth. While previously understood as “events,” trauma is now more widely considered to be the ruptures and residues of overwhelming events. Trauma is a state of disconnection and isolation and, as such, is a spiritual wound that disrupts our relationship with our Inner Wisdom.

Inner Wisdom is prophetic and speaks to us in the lexicon of dysregulation. Contemplative practices can take us to the core of ourselves and to the margins of experience, often to the areas of traumatic desolation. In the places of agony, the mystic can (re)discover union with their Inner Wisdom.

Using the body as a text of soma divina we can map the “Neuro-Mystic Landscape” through the integration of traumatology, Applied Polyvagal Theory, Applied Attachment Theory, Applied Internal Family Systems, and the Wisdom Traditions. This trauma-supporting model can facilitate a hermeneutic to help repair our disrupted connections.

This workshop will be expanded into a four-part preview course in June titled “The Neuro-Mystical Landscape: A Path of Soma Divina.”

Building on the SDI 2023 workshop, this course integrates Polyvagal Theory, Attachment Theory, and Internal Family Systems into a contemplative model for Soma Divina as a means for repairing the ruptures and residues of trauma. Through Soma Divina, dysregulation can become a pathway to the restoration of our relationship with our own Inner Wisdom. Participants who complete the course will receive a “permission to use” certificate and may include the model in their scope of practice.

Next Live Session:  30 June 2023

1:00pm EDT | 12:00pm CDT | 11:00am MDT | 10:00am PDT

2-hour Live Session

Modules 1 & 2 have been recorded and posted.

A perspective of spiritual abuse that weaves a trauma-supporting integration of neurobiology (Applied Polyvagal Theory), Applied Attachment Theory,  Applied Internal Family Systems, and the Wisdom Traditions.

Building on an initial presentation in April (recording included), this continuing series will explore the intersection of spirituality and trauma and how structural dissociation, shame, and spiritual bypassing are often a means of defense and preservation. In brief, spiritual abuse is when the fundamental spiritual rights of being, becoming, and belonging have turned toxic. Course content includes several infographics and time for questions. Additional Live Session dates will be in June.
