Hello! I hope that you are safe and well.
I go by "Shannon Michael."
I'm a trauma-integrating somatic spiritual director. My scope of practice integrates traumatology (the study of trauma), Applied Polyvagal Theory, Applied Attachment Theory, and Internal Family Systems with the Wisdom Traditions.
I believe that spiritual direction is intended to help us establish (where absent), cultivate (where present), and restore (where damaged) the connections to our Inner Wisdom in the Somatic relationships with our Self, others, Spirit, and the planet. My trauma-integrating perspective holds safe, brave, and complex space to be with and work with the trauma ruptures and residues as you make that journey toward wholeness.
My website has links to my online learning platform, portions of my own writing, and numerous other resources. If I can support your journey, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
Warmly,
Shannon Michael Pater

Safety first, connection second.
No safety, no connection.
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening therapy program developed by Dr. Stephen Porges that utilizes progressively filtered music as a non-invasive application of Polyvagal Theory. This research-based protocol helps to increase a felt sense of safety, decrease reactivity, and support a regulated and flexible nervous system.
Our spiritual practices are intended to establish, cultivate, and restore our sense of connection to our Self, others, Spirit, and the planet. But without a felt sense of safety in the nervous system, our efforts to connect may be disrupted.
Integrating SSP into spiritual practices can help restore a felt sense of somatic safety so that our spiritual practices can deeply nourish us in connection.
A two-month program begins in January 2025 with early access in December 2024.
More information and an early-bird registration in October 2024.
"Foundations of Trauma-Supporting Spiritual Care" Essays
A three-part essay series that examines the intersection of spirituality and trauma and defines a three-tiered scope of practice for support.
The Wisdom Traditions tell us that suffering is unavoidable; there are storms and seasons, breaches and betrayals of trust.
“Spirituality” concerns our connection to everything. “Trauma” is our isolation, fragmentation, & disassociation and is what happens inside of us when we suffer without compassionate companionship.
Trauma-Informed Spiritual Direction is a supported journey of the restoration of safe and nurturing connections with our selves, others, Spirit, and the planet.
